Frequently asked questions
01 What is cirrhosis?
Cirrhosis is advanced scarring of the liver from long-standing injury such as viral hepatitis, alcohol, fatty liver or other chronic liver diseases.
02 Is cirrhosis always from alcohol?
No. Viral hepatitis, fatty liver, autoimmune and inherited diseases can also cause cirrhosis. A full history and tests are essential.
03 What complications need urgent care?
Vomiting blood, black stools, sudden confusion, high fever, rapidly increasing abdominal swelling or jaundice worsening need emergency care.
04 Can cirrhosis improve?
Treating the cause (virus, alcohol, metabolic fat) can slow or partly improve function in some people. Established scarring still needs complication screening.
05 Are painkillers safe?
Many common tablets are not. Always bring your medicine list. Do not start new painkillers or herbal products without asking.
